NEXTFOOD, Building a future science and education system, med Martin Melin (AEM) som coordinator, samt VIVACITY, Promoting vibrant, inclusive and sustainable cities through nature, som Thomas Randrup (LAPF) koordinerar.  Vidare, ECO-TOPO om Bio-threats in tomato and potato, där Åsa Lankinen (VSB) är partner och Organic-PLUS där Laura Grenville Briggs (VSB) är partner.

Nya docenter

How often does it happen that you don´t have the time to finish all your tasks at work?
Often or always, was the answer given by a third of those who participated in the health check-up this spring.

There isn’t always time to finish work. Some tasks never end, there is always more to read or write, always more teaching to prepare, more applications to write. Deciding what is good enough is a difficult priority. The result of the check-up also shows that 99 per cent feel motivated and absorbed by their work, and just as many state that there is a good office atmosphere. There isn’t always time to do everything, but there is usually enough time for the most important tasks.

On new positions
In the previous deans’ letter we were hoping to soon have new key persons in place. Thomas Randrup has been appointed professor of urban open space management at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (LAPF), and Thomas Prade has been appointed assistant professor of systems analysis with focus on biological production systems at the Department of Biosystems and Technology (BT).

New staff has been recruited for the platform SLU Urban Future, which will be located at the Unit for Collaboration and Development. Lisa Diedrich is programme leader, assisted by her deputy Josefin Wangel Weithz – located at the Department of Urban and Rural Development in Uppsala, and programme secretary Nina Vogel. The platform SLU Future Food will be launched at the debate event Almedalsveckan on Gotland in early July. Annsofie Wahlström is programme leader, Pernilla Johnsson programme secretary and Gunilla Leffler is the communications officer, all of them located at the Department of Urban and Rural Development. SLU Future Food is located at the NJ Faculty in Uppsala, but like all these interdisciplinary platforms, it will comprise all of SLU. An additional member of staff is to be recruited at our faculty as a joint resource with responsibility for coordination and contacts connected to food activities.

Senior career award
The vice-chancellor has recently decided to allocate one of SLU’s senior career awards to Rickard Ignell (Department of Plant Protection Biology, VSB). Rickard receives SEK 1 million per year for five years, at his own disposal “within the subject of the assignment”.

A number of substantial grants have been granted:

  • Interreg project BioBIGG, EUR 225,000 to Eva Johansson (Plant Breeding, VF) and Sven-Erik Svensson (BT), and SB Food Inno, EUR 158,000  to Lisa Blix Germundsson (Unit for Collaboration and Development)
  • ERA-NET grants to Marco Tasin (VSB) SEK 2,019,000 for strategies for pest control management in apple, and to Malin Hultberg (BT) SEK 1,200,000 for REWATER – Sustainable and safe water management.

Four applications have continued to the second stage of Horizon 2020 (the LTV Faculty is the most successful faculty at SLU):

NEXTFOOD, Building a future science and education system, coordinated by Martin Melin (Department of Work Science, Business Economics and Environmental Psychology AEM), and VIVACITY, Promoting vibrant, inclusive and sustainable cities through nature, coordinated by Thomas Randrup (LAPF).  Further, ECO-TOPO on Bio-threats in tomato and potato, in which Åsa Lankinen (VSB) is a partner and Organic-PLUS in which Laura Grenville Briggs (VSB) is a partner.

New associate professors
The faculty has appointed two new docents (associate professors). Georg Carlsson (BT) and Ramune Kuktaite (VF) have achieved this title. Their research lies within the subject future protein crops, for human consumption and for bio-based materials respectively.

The Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, which handles issues concerning SLU, has drafted an action plan for its new food policy and allocated SEK 1 million to the Centre for Agricultural Business Management (KCF). In addition, SLU receives SEK 15 million for a research school for PhDs connected to the industry, Formas SEK 50 million for a multi-disciplinary research programme for the food sector, Vinnova SEK 9 million for incubators and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) SEK 4 million for an arena of actors in the food chain. In total, SEK 78 million which we will try to get a share of.

Education
Regarding admissions to doctoral education, we can conclude that we have high numbers and a good spread of subjects, and that the development looks good. As for undergraduate and Master’s programmes, Vice Dean Mats Gyllin has informed everybody about the development (see e-mail 22 May). There will be two new Masters’ programmes, in landscape architecture in Uppsala and in horticultural science in Alnarp.  SLU will continue to train horticulturalists, a vocational degree, although the Board of Education advocates halting admissions to that programme as of 2018. The changes will render students more choice, with the aim of strengthening higher education in horticultural science.

Honorary doctors
The faculty has appointed two honorary doctors; Edgar B. ”Ed” Cahoon, Lincoln Nebraska, who is an expert in research in biotechnology, and Catharine Ward Thompson, Edinburgh, landscape architect focusing on the importance of outdoor environments to human health. They will attend the doctoral award ceremony in autumn together with all the new PhDs.

We congratulate everyone on new positions and all of you who have received new grants to further develop our research!

So, instead of thinking of what you haven’t been able to fit in, think instead of all you have achieved this past spring semester. There isn’t always time to do everything, but there is usually enough time for the most important tasks. Perhaps not everything needs to be finished before the summer holidays – there will be more motivating and absorbing work to do later on.

With these words, we would like to express our thanks for all your good work and wish you all a nice Midsummer and an enjoyable holiday.
