Det har varit fantastiskt att vara rektor för SLU, ett universitet med viktiga uppdrag, med motiverade medarbetare och studenter, och med en mycket stark utveckling. Utvärderarna av Kvalitet och Nytta 2018 pekade på att vi äger ett guldägg. Nu fortsätter SLU med delvis nytt ledarskap och med en god prognos.
Självklart finns det betydande utmaningar, som också fanns med redan när jag blev aktuell för jobbet som rektor. Flera av dem hänger ihop med samhällsomvandlingen, som gjort att färre och färre är bekanta med naturresursers brukande. Men vi har slagit in på en väg som för framåt och det är att planera för att ta in många fler studenter. De behövs i samhället och kommer att hjälpa till att göra SLU och de sektorer vi samverkar med mycket mer kända. Det inbegriper framför allt att öka kunskapen om hur vi ska utveckla nya metoder för att uppnå hög produktion med minsta möjliga negativa effekter på miljön. Vad gäller djurhållning, så är det förstås också etiska principer som ska beaktas.
Utmaningar kommer det alltid att finnas, men jag hoppas att vi under min tid som rektor samlat oss för att ta itu med de som beskrivs ovan mer medvetet och med nya metoder, bland annat med hjälp av våra framtidsplattformar och andra nya sätt att förmedla vad SLU är och gör.
Det största med att vara ledare för SLU är att arbeta med alla människor som brinner för sin forskning, undervisning och miljöanalys, eller för sina uppgifter i administrationen. Det har också varit mycket inspirerande att möta energin och nyfikenheten hos våra studenter.
Tack för all den energi som ni förmedlat och som burit mig i mitt arbete som rektor!
Erfarenheterna från tiden som rektor gör det lätt för mig att fortsätta som ambassadör för SLU; jag kommer stolt att bära en SLU-pin på kavajen när jag de närmaste åren återigen jobbar som professor med forskning och grundutbildning som viktigaste arbetsuppgifter.

Thank you and goodbye!
My years as vice-chancellor of SLU have been fantastic – it is a university showing strong development, with an important mission and motivated students and staff. According to the KoN 2018 assessors, we are inpossession of a golden egg. SLU will now move forward with partly new leadership, and with great expectations for the future.
There are obviously still some important challenges; they were there already when I took over as vice-chancellor. Several of them are linked to societal changes that mean fewer and fewer people understand what using natural resources involves. But we have found a path forward and that involves planning for a considerable increase in the number of students. Society needs them, and they will help make SLU and our sectors more visible. Above all, this concerns increasing the knowledge of how to develop new methods that mean high production rates coupled with the smallest possible negative effect on the environment. As for animal husbandry, there are also ethical principles to take into account.
There will always be challenges, but I hope that during my time as vice-chancellor, we have pulled together to deal with the above in a more determined way and with new methods, for example our ’Future’ platforms and other new ways of conveying what SLU is and does.
For me, the most positive thing about leading SLU hasbeen the opportunity to work with people who are passionate about their research, teaching and environmental assessment, or about their tasks as part of the administration. It has also been very inspiring to encounter the energy and curiosity of our students.
Thank you for the energy you spread – it has supported me in my work as vice-chancellor.
My experiences as vice-chancellor will make it easy for me to continue being an ambassador for SLU. I will proudly wear the SLU pin on my lapel as, for the next few years, I return to being a professor with research and undergraduate teaching as my most important tasks.
We are now looking forward to the festive season. From me to you, happy holidays and all the best for the new year!
