Vi har nyss installerat nya professorer. Fyra i Uppsala och fyra i Umeå. Tre kvinnor och fem män, vilket betyder att andelen professorer som är kvinnor ökar sakta. Den ligger över riksgenomsnittet, men vi har förstås visionen att vara helt jämställda. Diversiteten bland de nya professorerna kan också beskrivas som två kvinnor från Sverige, en från USA, två män från Australien, en från Ryssland, en från Tyskland och en från Finland. Vi rekryterar från hela världen.
De åtta nya professorerna har spännande kunskaper och bidrar till att öka vår totala tankerymd. Det var fantastiskt inspirerande att lyssna på deras installations-föreläsningar, som beskrev aktiviteter i alla världsdelar, och perspektiv från samhällen och ekosystem till cellers innersta mysterier.
Även andra som anställs vid universitet eller kommer som studenter bidrar med kunskaper, erfarenheter och ambitioner. I fallet professorer blir det extra påtagligt genom exponeringen i samband med deras installation.
Det är denna ström av människor och deras kunskap och kreativitet, som utgör själva motorn i vårt universitet. Det gäller att vårda och utveckla den. Resultat från den nyligen genomförda medarbetarundersökningen pekar på att SLU är en bra arbetsplats, men att det finns behov av möjligheter till reflektion och återhämtning.
I den strategi för 2017-2020, som styrelsen ska diskutera vid sitt kommande möte i juni lyfter vi fram medarbetare och studenter som våra viktigaste resurser. Ett universitet måste organiseras så att de utvecklas väl och samverkar på bästa sätt. Installationerna av de nya professorerna var en viktig påminnelse om betydelsen av människornas potentialer.

New professors, new ideas
We have just installed new professors – four in Uppsala and four in Umeå. Three women and five men, which means that the share of female professors is slowly edging up. It is above the national average, but our vision, of course, is equal shares. The diversity among the new professors can also be described as two women from Sweden, one from the US, two men from Australia, one from Russia, one from Germany and one from Finland. We recruit from all over the world.
The eight new professors all possess exciting knowledge and contribute to increasing our space of ideas. Listening to their installation lectures was very inspiring – they covered work in all parts of the world, presented perspectives from communities and ecosystems and described the innermost mysteries of cells.
All our staff, as well our students, contribute their knowledge, experience and aspirations. However, in the case of our professors it becomes particularly evident through the exposure that their installation brings with it.
It is this flow of people, their knowledge and their creativity, that is the engine of our university. It is important that we nurture and develop it. Results from the recent staff survey show that SLU is a good place to work, but that there is a need for more reflection and recovery.
In the 2017–2020 strategy, which the Board will discuss at its June meeting, we highlight staff and students as our most important resources. A university must be organised in such a way that it can develop and make the most of the opportunities for cooperation. The installation of our new professors was an important reminder of the importance of human potential.
