Our fly larvae team participated in the yearly Matologi event organized by SLU. This year’s exhibition had a focus on waste and climate. Evgheni Ermolaev, Giulio Zorzetto and Panav Gupta presented the Kretsloppsfluga concept being developed by the group and showed the treatment module currently being tested at a pilot plant at Eskilstuna Strängnäs Energi… Continue reading Fly larvae composting presented at Matologi

New intern working on fly larvae composting
Meet Panav Gupta – the group’s latest intern from India who is currently working with the black solider fly team. During his bachelors program in civil engineering, Panav was very interested in the field of waste management, especially the potential and economic outlook of using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) for treating various types of… Continue reading New intern working on fly larvae composting
Crispy fried black soldier fly larvae!
After rearing about 10.000 larvae on food-graded feed (toast bread) it was time for the big harvest at our greenhouse! After purging and freezing the larvae, we seasoned portions of them with either garlic, lime juice, onions, mint, vinegar, chilli, salt or olive oil and let them soak over night. The result was absolutely amazing… Continue reading Crispy fried black soldier fly larvae!
Nigerian visit to the fly larvae lab
On Thurday, June 28th, we had the honour to show our research activities to a Nigierian delegation, including the Nigeria ambassador to Sweden, H.E. Musa Ilu Mohammed and the Govenour of Borno, H.E. Hon. Kashim Shettima, who were visiting SLU. Björn was presenting our visions for future solid waste management, using fly larvae composting to… Continue reading Nigerian visit to the fly larvae lab
Our fly larvae composting research is featured in a Swedish journal “Forskning & Framsteg”
Cecilia Lalander, the researcher leading fly larvae composting research at the Environmental Engineering group, has been interviewed by Anna Froster for the Swedish popular scientific journal Forskning & Framsteg. The article discusses various issues and achievements around the use of black soldier fly larvae to convert waste to value. Among others, the benefits discussed are… Continue reading Our fly larvae composting research is featured in a Swedish journal “Forskning & Framsteg”
Course in modular fly larvae treatment: rearing and composting
Foto: Evgheni Ermolaev Date: 14/3-2018, 9 – 16 Location: Campus Ultuna (Biosfären och Flugväxthuset), Uppsala Price: 5000 SEK/person Under this one-day course the course delegates will be presented with a general introduction to fly larvae treatment, including both the fly rearing and composting steps. Bachelor thesis presentation: Greenhouse gas emissions from fly larvae composting
Foto: Viktoria Wiklicky Frida Erlöv will present her Bachelor thesis about Greenhouse gas emissions from fly larvae composting on 22 February at 2 pm in Ekoln. Håkan Jönsson is the examinor. The presentation will be held in Swedish. Abstract Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) composting have proven to be very effective in degradation of organic… Continue reading Bachelor thesis presentation: Greenhouse gas emissions from fly larvae composting
Evans Were joins Kretsloppsteknik as post-doc
Evans Were has joined the Kretsloppsteknik group as a Postdoc Research Fellow. At SLU, Evans will investigate the mechanisms and dynamics of infectious biological agents, including prions, bacteriophages, and spore-forming bacteria in the process of bio-conversion of biowaste using black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae. Larvae of H. illucens remarkably convert biowaste into larval biomass… Continue reading Evans Were joins Kretsloppsteknik as post-doc
Ava and Evelina join us to investigate fate of mussel toxins in BSFL treatment
Hi, our names are Ava & Evelina. We are two 17 year old girls in our final year studying Natural science (Naturvetenskap) at Rosendalsgymnasiet. For nearly three years we’ve been studying topics based around scientific subjects. Part of our studies consists of a scientific rapport, called a Gymnasiearbete (highschool diploma work), a requirement needed to… Continue reading Ava and Evelina join us to investigate fate of mussel toxins in BSFL treatment
Visit from our Estonian collaborators
Keeping a viable and productive Black Soldier Fly colony up and running can be hard sometimes, this is why it is great to have international relationships and colleagues to help you out when your colony needs to be replaced. Our Black Soldier Fly colleagues from Estonia picked up their new stock of larvae from SLU… Continue reading Visit from our Estonian collaborators
