This week, we (Sahar Dalahmeh, Mikael Pell, Annika Nordin, Cecilia Lalander, and Prithvi Simha) are in Jordan, conducting a 1-week course on recycling of various household waste fractions. The course is given at the Hashemite University, located about 50 km away from the capital city Amman. A group of about 20 very enthusiastic and inquistive students are learning about various topics such as wastewater microbiology, hygienisation, urine diversion and dehydration, vermi- and black soldier fly composting, on-site wastweater treatment, etc.

A pilot multi-module biochar filter was built and is running in a household in Gamla Uppsala
A demonstration household biochar filter has been built and is now running in a household in Gamla Uppsala to treat wastewater from a single household of 5 person. The filter has a unique design in which the biochar is used as a filter material in a multi module cabinet staked biochar of different properties to remove different types of pollutants including organics and micro pollutants. During the upcoming period, the quality of the wastewater will be analysed for different parameters (COD, Tot-N, Tot-P and other pollutants). New project: development of analytical methods for extraction, identification & quantification of microplastics in sewage sludge
With a generous financial support from eight wastewater treatment utilities in Sweden as well as from Svenskt vatten (via VA-kluster Mälardalen), Sahar Dalahmeh started a research project focusing on development of analytical method for extraction, identification and quantification of microplastics in sewage sludge. Different extraction protocols (acids, base and enzymatic extraction will be tested and optimised). Also, different identification methods will be investigated, not the least these using µ-FTIR for chemical imaging. All the equipment needed for development the method are in place including state of the art Cary 660 IR spectroscopes coupled to 620 Cary FTIR microscope (Agilent Technologies) for micro imaging and chemical scanning microscope. The projects runs during 2019-2021. For more information, please contact Sahar Dalahmeh (Sahar.Dalahmeh@slu.se)
Interest of Swedish Wastewater organisations to learn about pharmaceutical fate during sewage sludge post treatment storage & reclaimed water recycling in agriculture
Fate of pharmaceuticals during sewage sludge storage and composting and Use of reclaimed water in agriculture: Potential, technologies, implementation, regulations and other aspects, were among the topics presented in Annual Intranet workshop VA- kluster Mäladalen 22-23rd of august 2019. Sahar Dalahmeh hold the lectures and very active discussion followed the presentations. For more information, please contact Sahar Dalahmeh (Sahar.Dalahmeh@slu.se)
Wastewater irrigation for sustainable Water-food- energy nexus
Sahar Dalahmeh, researcher at the group was invited as a key note speaker in the International Workshop in Water, food and energy nexus organised within the 10th national conference of environmental chemistry in Tianjin in China 16-19th August 2019. In her talk, Sahar highlighted the important potential of using wastewater for irrigation for food production. She also presented her latest results on whether Micro pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and PFAS can be a risk when wastewater is used for irrigated agriculture. For more information, please contact Sahar Dalahmeh (Sahar.Dalahmeh@slu.se)
Makoto joins Kretsloppsteknik
Hi, I’m Makoto from Japan. I will work on the analysis of perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals in wastewater with Sahar Dalahmeh at SLU’s Kretsloppsteknik group. Since I have been interested in sanitation research right from my Environmental Engineering bachelor studies in Japan, I am grateful for this opportunity to continue to learn and work at SLU.

New Publication on removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in onsite wastewater treatment
In this study, we investigated the potential of biochar filters as a replacement or complement for sand filters for removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from wastewater in onsite sewage facilities. In a 22-weeks experiment, concentrations, removal and adsorption of nine perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs; C3- 11) and three perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs; C4, 6, 8) and one perfluorooctanesulfonamide (FOSA; C8) were investigated in four treatments: biochar with active, biochar with inactive biofilm, biochar without biofilm and sand with active biofilm. We found that biochar with no biofilm achieved higher removal efficiency (90-99%) and the adsorption capacity (73 -168 ng g-1 ) for C7-C11 PFCAs, C6, C8 PFSAs and FOSA, than the other biochar and sand treatments. For all biochar treatments, shorter-chain PFASs were more resistant to removal than longer-chain PFASs.
Water & Wastewater Speciality in the Journal Frontiers in Environmental Science
A new section about water and wastewater has been launched as a speciality section in the journal, Frontiers in Environmental Science. Björn Vinnerås together with the co-chief editor, Prof. Paolo Perona and the members of the editorial board welcome contributions to the journal. We aim at publishing pioneering, high-quality research in key areas of integrated and sustainable water and wastewater resources management. These include, for instance, uses and processes involving surface- and groundwater bodies, engineering techniques with a focus on upstream work, virtual water networks, innovative water and wastewater treatment solutions in humid, semiarid and arid regions, analytical and numerical modelling as well as the use of innovative algorithms devoted to the analysis of big-datasets. New Publication: Health risks from wastewater irrigation in Bolivia
In our latest study published in Journal of Water and Health, we assessed the pathogen flows in a water&nutrients reuse system for production of lettuce in a peri-urban zone in the highlands of Bolivia. Viral and bacterial indicators, and helminth eggs were quantified in soil, water and lettuce samples taken during one crop season, and then statistically processed to analyse the flows of microbial contamination throughout the system.
