Text in English below

Quality and Impact 2018 – interview week begins!

This coming week SLU is host to over 90 expert reviewers who will evaluate the quality of our research and the impact that our research has on society. Their views are invaluable. Of course, we each have our own perception of which things we do well, but by augmenting this perception with the unbiased expertise of reviewers who are external to SLU, we can get a deeper understanding of how we can increase the quality of our research.

The expert reviewers have at their disposal materials for the evaluation: bibliometric analyses (conducted by the SLU library staff), self-assessments written by each research group and not least, interviews between the research groups and the members of their expert panels. The interviews begin this last week of May and are the culmination of extensive activities by many people at SLU, led by the Quality and Impact project group.

Quality and Impact, KoN2018, will be the basis for strategic decisions on all levels throughout the university, from SLU’s University Board to the individual researcher. We already see that the self-assessments are of high quality and serve to describe the research groups’ future potential development.

The research evaluation, Quality and Impact 2018, differs from that done in 2009 in several ways. One is that more emphasis is placed upon strategic visions of the research groups. Another is that it we now conduct a more thorough description of the impact of SLU’s research on society.

Some of the questions to which we want answers:

  • What are we good at?
Where are we not quite as good and the consequential question: should we try to become better – if so, then how?

We also hope for concrete and constructive suggestions from our reviewers of a more general nature. As an example, Quality and Impact 2009 identified that SLU needed to strengthen our leadership, which led to an investment in this; the group for sustainable academic leadership (GHAL).

We have an exciting week ahead of us and we look forward to seeing the results of the research evaluation.

Carolyn Glynn, leader of the Quality and Impact group
