SLU has its own urine-diverting flush toilet!

Today was quite an exciting day at Kretsloppsteknik for the urine drying project as we received our shipment of a prototype of the pioneering urine-diverting toilet developed by EOOS, Eawag and LAUFEN. In the coming month, our group along with SLU and Akademiska Hus will install the toilet at the Department of Energy and Technology. We then plan to connect this toilet to a prototype of the urine dehydration technology being developed by us. The toilet along with our technology has the potential to disrupt the status quo in sanitation and revolutionise the sector! This installation is being supported by funding from the SLU Climate Fund.

About the toilet: EOOS, Eawag and LAUFEN have developed a pioneering urine-diverting toilet that revolutionizes the user interface for sustainable urban water management. save! is an evolution of the pioneering Blue Diversion Toilet, which was developed by EOOS and Eawag and supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

How does it work? The product’s key innovation is a “Urine Trap” invented by EOOS Design, which directs urine towards a concealed outlet using only surface tension. Laufen applied this concept to a new toilet design featuring a ceramic bowl that is optimally shaped to guide the water flow. The interface’s easy maintenance, low-tech, hidden innovation ensures it is indistinguishable from any other high-end WC. save! represents a new format for a familiar product that is business ready and could play a key role in the future of wastewater management.
