On a new post

Just another month to go before I take up the post as deputy vice-chancellor and professor of physical geography at SLU’s Department of Urban and Rural Development. I feel humble, happy and grateful for the confidence SLU has shown me. I will do everything I can to honour it. The vice-chancellor has asked me, like the current deputy vice-chancellor, to take special responsibility for education issues. This is something I am more than happy to do. My current department has a tradition of prioritising education at undergraduate and Master’s level and offers a wide range of courses and programmes. I feel confident and motivated to take on this responsibility at SLU.

To help lead a university like SLU is an important task. A university whose core businesses focus on some of the crucial issues of the future: how to create economically and ecologically sustainable production systems in agriculture, forestry, animal use, etc. – our green natural resources – in a world with a growing population, a serious refugee situation and a climate development that causes concern. Successful research and research-related education in the sectors SLU is responsible for make a difference! Many of the subjects taught at SLU have points of contact with the core business at my current department at Stockholm University, the Department of Physical Geography. There are also clear links to my own research interests – climate change in a historical perspective and links between social progress and climate development. Some of SLU’s subjects are of course completely new to me, and I look forward to getting to know all the different activities at SLU! The first few months will be an interesting learning experience. First and foremost, I must quickly get to know the everyday business, opportunities and challenges, from grass-root level to the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, relevant sectors of society and our different research funding bodies.

Until 1 March I will be busy tying up loose ends and handing over my work as head of the Department of Physical Geography at Stockholm University. This past year, the department has actively worked to develop strategies for its activities in the years to come, and we are now in the final phase of this work. The process has given me many ideas and taught me lessons that I will benefit from in my new post. I now look forward to taking on, along with the vice-chancellor and all of SLU, the strategic and university policy issues related to both future global sustainable development and a creative, constructive and sustainable development of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Karin Holmgren
Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 1 March
